Jeragat (Pigmentation): Causes, and What Actually Helps

Jeragat, the patchy pigmentation many Malaysians know too well, is caused by UV exposure, heat and hormonal changes, not by dirt or poor cleansing. It cannot be permanently removed by any cream or scrub. What genuinely helps: strict daily sunscreen, proven brightening ingredients like niacinamide, and professional brightening care with realistic expectations.

What causes it

Sun is the biggest driver, and in Malaysia the sun is a daily event, not a summer one. Heat itself can worsen pigmentation, which matters in our climate. Hormones play a role too, which is why pigmentation often deepens during and after pregnancy. Genetics load the gun; sun pulls the trigger.

Why home remedies alone rarely work

Lime juice, scrubs and DIY masks attack the surface, but pigment sits deeper and is produced continuously. Aggressive scrubbing often backfires: irritation and heat signal the skin to produce more pigment, not less. If a remedy stings, it is likely making things worse.

The daily habits that actually matter

  • SPF50+ every morning, rain or shine, and reapplied at midday if you are outdoors. This is the single highest-impact habit, and the one product we insist on.
  • Niacinamide daily. Well-studied for evening out tone gradually. Our Radiance Serum pairs it with tranexamic acid.
  • Gentle cleansing only. No harsh scrubs over pigmented areas.
  • Shade habits: hats, umbrellas, and avoiding the 12pm to 3pm sun when you can.

What professional care can realistically do

A brightening treatment using vitamin-C infusion and gentle resurfacing can visibly fade pigmentation and even out tone over 4 to 6 sessions. What it cannot do is erase deep pigmentation permanently, and anyone who promises that is overselling. For deep or rapidly changing pigmentation, we will tell you honestly in consultation if a doctor is the better first stop.

Frequently asked

Can jeragat be removed completely?

No treatment, cosmetic or otherwise, can guarantee permanent removal, because your skin keeps producing pigment in response to sun, heat and hormones. Fading it visibly and preventing it from deepening is a realistic goal; erasing it forever is not.

Does niacinamide help with pigmentation?

Yes. Niacinamide is one of the best-studied brightening ingredients and helps even out tone gradually with daily use over 8 to 12 weeks. It works best alongside strict daily SPF, not instead of it.

Facial or laser for jeragat?

A professional brightening facial is a safe, non-invasive middle ground that fades pigmentation over 4 to 6 sessions. Medical lasers are stronger but belong in a doctor-led clinic. For deep or changing pigmentation, see a doctor first; we will tell you if that is your situation.
